Our Commitment to Sustainability
We believe that great hospitality goes hand-in-hand with caring for our planet. We are committed to making responsible choices that reduce our environmental impact and support our local community. Going beyond what is expected and constantly challenging ourselves to find a better way of working all in the name of securing a better future for everyone.

You may see lots of pubs and restaurants throwing around 'sustainability' in their marketing but can you ever see any real evidence or action being taken? How are they backing up their claims? Does it all seem a bit vague and loosely termed? At The Chagford Inn, sustainability isn’t just a policy, it’s more like a way of life. We'll be honest and up front, we know we are far from perfect. We are on our own sustainability journey but we are committed to making every step count!
Sustainability is the heart of everything we do from sourcing our produce regeneratively, locally and ethically to supporting small like minded businesses directly. Actively engaging in our community, all the way through to the boring stuff like monitoring and managing waste and energy consumption.

Our team is central to this mission. We actively invest in their training and wellbeing so they feel empowered to champion sustainability every day. Above all, we act with honesty and transparency, ensuring every decision reflects our values and our vision for the future of the planet.
Raising A Glass to Our Changes So Far
We’ve been busy behind the scenes making changes that matter. From reducing waste and cutting carbon emissions to sourcing locally and supporting small businesses, every step brings us closer to where we aim to be. We’ve introduced energy-saving measures, partnered with Devon-based suppliers, and even started growing our own herbs and edible flowers in the garden. These efforts may seem small, but together they make a big difference and we’re proud to share this journey with you.

Measuring What Matters
How can you track progress without first setting a clear starting point? In 2024 we undertook a full scope 1, 2 and 3 carbon foot printing in partnership with NetShift CIC. This gives us a clear goal to work forwards and reduce our impact.
Energy Use
Our electricity is supplied through a zero carbon tariff that is underpinned by REGO's. In February 2026 we installed a Voltage Optimiser reducing the incoming voltage into the pub between 10%-20%. We will have a definite figure on its impact by Feb 2027.
We have also been upgrading and modernising the capital equipment to more efficiently rated appliances.
Waste Management
Alongside our partnership with Devon Contract Waste, who provide recycling services, We hot compost some of our own food waste on site.
Sourcing Matters
Local, Regenerative, Direct, Quality, Ethical.
There are many aspects we look at when selecting who to work with when sourcing produce. Our bar proudly promotes independent breweries (no national brewery brands here), and our kitchen only works with produce that meets our stringent criteria.
Community
Community is hugely important to us here. We have committed to providing assistance, food and service bi-monthly for the Chagford Memory Café. A local project delivering social sessions for people living with memory problems and their carers.
Brewing For A Better Future
Things in the Pipeline
We’re always looking forward, exploring new ways to deepen our sustainability journey and make meaningful improvements year after year. One of our next steps is the creation of a formal Impact Report, giving us a clear and transparent way to track progress. We want it to be more than just data we hope it becomes a fun, engaging, and informative tool that highlights where we’re succeeding and where we can push ourselves further.

We’re also excited to explore rainwater harvesting using collected grey water for areas such as our garden. It’s early days, but we’re already starting to develop plans and look forward to the possibilities this could bring for our edible garden.
As many guests know, we’re proud to have stepped away from national and multinational brewery contracts, a move that gives us freedom, fairness, and values‑driven choice. Now, we’re taking the next step by reviewing our entire back bar and replacing spirits with products that meet our sustainability criteria. After analysing 94 of our core bar products, we’re pleased to share that 61% are currently local or ethically produced. Our 2026 mission is to make this genuinely 100%, ensuring every drink we pour supports a South West producer or meets trusted environmental certifications. And yes Ollie’s dream of crafting his own Cola is very much alive… so watch this space.

Our connection to the local community is just as important. We’ve loved working alongside The Chagford Memory Café, and we’re eager to expand our involvement in more community projects. We’ve already reached out to Proper Job and the local regenerative farmers’ group, offering our space for any events or gatherings they’d like to host. Being able to support the people around us is one of the most rewarding parts of this journey.

Finally, with the recent introduction of Personal Development Plans, we’re excited to support each team member as they flourish both in their roles at The Chagford Inn and beyond. These open, supportive conversations help create a better working environment and a stronger, more confident team to carry our sustainability vision forward.
